Derpy paint Empty Derpy paint

Post by JohnHowes Mon Mar 25, 2013 10:22 pm

ok so this is my third attempt at digital paint but i wanted some feedback this time BEFORE i put any color in. This is Derpy shes got a set color scheme and I've got the exact pantone colors for her. what I need help with is solid line work and knowing when to push the shadows and... well painting in general really. I don't do alot of painting. Markers, pens, pencils... rarely paint. so any tips for painting this would be immensly appreciated. This isn't an assignment I'm just trying to get better at this. And its Derpy cuase... well, I like Derpy.

as far as painting goes it's not bad at all. Since MLP:FiM tends to use a raster-image look, then bringing it into paint gives you the liberty of keeping very simple shading, which you've done nicely.

something that threw me off was looking at the stretched hind-leg. It seemed really long to me.... but it's accurate to the proportions of the front leg. then I realized the two legs closer to us are not proportionate to the legs furthest from us. the (back) front-leg is too long, and the (back) hind-leg is too short..... lemme work with this in PS and I'll post again.

it looks like a 3/4 view face with a profile view mouth. Also the smile throws off the the ears. The ears would drop if the character was frightened or shamed like if you caught Derpy wizzing on the carpet. The again the ears aren't totally dropped so maybe that's not even what you were going for, in that case i'd point them more into the air. Just Google ponies. You will see. There is even an example of the dropped ears look.

ok so here's what i've done. First i created and arch in the back, this is commonly done with the ponies in the show; it allows you to have a beautiful curve in the back and has raised her hips up. I've done this so that hind-leg comes off the ground just slightly and it the right length. Then I pushed the other hind leg forward a little bit, this adds more of a realistic weight to the character and gives her a beautiful silhouette. Also I gave the back front leg more of a bend, again this improves the silhouette of the character and fixes the length problem. finally I added a little length to the front leg to make it feel like it's in front of everything else and is anatomically correct.

mind you this is very rough so it might need some improving. But I think it'll help you out a lot. (I think I also unintentionally fixed the face issues chickmagnet was pointing out) lol

As for "how to paint" there are some free tutorials here: digital painting But without seeing more its hard to give advice on how to fix your painting skills. Right now your lines are very choppy and thick. If you want them smooth you need to learn how to make one long stroke with your pen/tablet. Not hatching out a line where you need it.

Lines become more interesting when they have different thicknesses along its length. You can get this with a tapered brush in photoshop and learning how to lift your pen at just the right moment. An eraser will work to get a taper at the end of a line...but I think its harder to go back and fix it then to do it right the first time.

There is one shadow that shouldn't be there. Above the forward back leg you have a shadow being cast up onto a wall. But all your other shadows are falling on the lower right of things.

Just some thoughts. Hope they help. Keep going on this for sure!

ooo all good critique. I'll deffinatly change up the leg shapes and move some stuff around you're drawing over my drawing is very helpful.

As for the lines, I'm having trouble with both long strokes and variations due to not knowing a darn thing about tablets. like i try ease up on the pressure to create thinner strokes but in doing so it also decreases opacity significantly. which isn't helpful when trying to do clean line work. the surface area of my tablet is quite small the intereactive area is about 8 inches wide and 5 inches tall. I have a hard time doing broad strokes like i would on something larger. I just plain run out of room. and i know you can zoom in and out but it doesn't seem to help me much.

I understand the smaller tablet size. I had one of those and it is a bit of a pain to work on. With the brush you have a different brush than what I would recommend for drawing lines. You can google how to make a brush or just download one from like deviant art. There are lots of drawing brushes around that will taper instead of go transparent.

If the opacity is changing with the pressure sensitivity, it could be a brush setting in your photoshop. usually it won't do that.
