Re: Throne room ruins
your work is awesome. albiet unfinished. As a scene it suffers from deadcenteritis. The focus is in the middle of the picture if i were you i'd either emphasize it by doing a worms eye view of the statue or change the angle to allow the statue to fall on one of the outer thirds.

Re: Throne room ruins
hmm ya thanks
I knew it was really boring looking at it straight on. I tried tilting it up a little be kind of worms eye view but I'll push it a little more.

I love this. You don't give yourself enough credit.
Here are my notes: The worm's eye is really working for me, but like you stated I wouldn't have it looking straight on, but maybe at an angle. For me when I have to think up backgrounds I always keep in mind the rule of thirds. Also don't be afraid of asymmetry. As for a color scheme, if your going for creepy, dark cool colors work really well like blue or green.

now this is legitmatly awesome! spend some time on the colors (you have alot of earth tones so make them stand out through value and texture. make some things grainy and other shiney some light and some dark and so on. you get the idea) make sure you have plenty of contrast and you've got yourself an amazing work. (make sure that lantern is casting the most light it'd be pointless if it didn't)

Re: Throne room ruins
Second sketch is going to be great! The only thing about the angle that bothers me (and it was in the first one too) are the stairs. The angle on it feels off. like they should disappear faster once they reach half way. Not sure how to explain.
Re: Throne room ruins
hmmm.. I can see what you mean. The stairs do seem a bit off. It's really hard to get some perspectives down since its a giant beast king who uses the stairs. I will draw them fading away faster if that's more appealing though
Re: Throne room ruins
Like eventually you wouldn't be able to see them at the top any more as the wall rotated...I might be off on how I'm reading your sketch though. :S
Re: Throne room ruins
Yay! I like this version alot betta! I think that at this angle it seems alot more immense and imposing, which I think is what you were trying to achieve by doing worms eye.
If you're still thinking of a creepy color palatte, instead of going with earthy browns and natural tones. Go for something a little more unatural, cool colors, like blue green and even purple and pink can give an unsettling feeling. Oh and it would be fun to see how you play with the lighting too! Especially the shadows you can cast with that lantern.

Re: Throne room ruins
haha I never thought of using pink as a creepy color lol. And I do agree I'll use some cool colors rather than brown. Brown is just so brown >->
Thanks guys for all the advice!

Re: Throne room ruins
I think of Invader Zim with the whole pink scheme.
Oh, and "Brown is Brown". Deal with it.

Re: Throne room ruins
I think you are on the right track! Looks great!! The major light source draws the eye to the girl and the soft ray from above draws the attention back up to the statue after. I love it!
Re: Throne room ruins
This look great Bobbie! Few suggestions, I do't know that your skulls in the mid-back section to the left would be that light with the throne in the way. You could also add that other light scours we talked about and have it pointing more at the statues head.

Re: Throne room ruins
Awesome thanks for pointing that out! I completely forgot about the skulls! I had another light on it but decided not to use it and I almost forgot to dim it down o - o I'll try and see if other lights on the statue will make it more appealing, I really do want to make the statue pop out more.
Re: Throne room ruins
Oooooh! Creepy cool!... get it? get it?
The ony thing for me is I would push the contrast just a tad bit more... I know it might seem a little redundant, but sometimes that extra push makes things pop.

awesome. just awesome. okay now i'm excited. We need some ambience though. Dust in the light. texture in the rock. glossy shine in the statue. stuff like that.
