Lamille - Coloring

Post by JohnHowes on Thu Mar 07, 2013 2:07 am

This is only my second attempt to paint in photoshop. I'd like some more experinced folk to help critique my work so i can improve this before I hand it in. the emphasis for this assignment is color.

This is looking great especially for a second attempt. I definately like your technique, what brush are you using?

I'm no pro at painting, but I'll critique on what I do know about... liiines.
One think I would note on is your outline that you have going. You've got the right idea for differenciating (i think i just butchered that word...) the line weight. but it could be a little more subtle then what you have. Try not to make the heavy lines so harsh also smoothing your lines so that their really defined helps alot.

Also if you give the image a stronger light source would be great, which could also help with the contrast.

yes i have trouble with lines in digital i lack the control i'm used to in traditional.
I just use a regular round brush with about 75% opacity and flow. I create a pallate of about 6 colors and then sample and mix the colors till i have some gradation then i just select the colors from the pallate i created.
here is a picture with the pallate layer active.

Ahhh... I know exactly what you mean. It takes a while to get used to drawing on a tablet/cintiq. Practice really comes into play here.

That is really smart to make a pallate. And adding that orange to her lion/goat half really made a difference. I would keep pushing it. Your headed in the right direction!

I know you were asking for coloring but I went through and added a draw over for the anatomy. This is how I would do it so take it with a grain of salt. It may not be your thing.

I wasn't sure with the hind legs what specific animal you were going for. So I did a larger hoof (like a cow) and a thinner (like a deer) example. Reference, reference!!

I had to make the body taller to feel right and even so the hind legs are really stubby to me.

Remember how an animal walks. Legs on the same side will be apposing each other. And you have it even more tricky with the upper body turning away.

As for colors...I just felt like it needed more variety! I tried to keep it in your palette but still mix it up. I added gray and then blue from the background to the snake. Cobras tend to have some fun patterns to their scales so you can totally play that up! And then I added spots but you could stripe or just gradually move between colors on the body.

Again this is how I would have handled this so take all or none of this as you like.

Wow to do all that just illustrate some help. Thanks. I've got a couple of drawings taking some advice into account but unfortunatly my scanner only scanned one picture and abruptly stopped working.
Here it is. This one is traditional. The scanner baked the colors but you get a better Idea of how child like she Should be in the painting. but again i feel l lack control with the tablet.

I would agree with what everyone is saying. With more practice in Photoshop and using a tablet it will become second nature. I still have a lot to learn myself. But I do like your pose in the first image. I would agree to shorten the tail and change the angle a little. But for your second try it is good:)

I you get a chance to sketch it out with just pencil and paper and scan (I know you said yours was broken) or take a camera photo so we can see the difference in your skills with pencil vs tablet that would be good to see.
